[best viewed on black] Sitting alone under the stars on the "Racetrack" at Death Valley last week was one of the most surreal experiences I've had in years. The vast playa, the abject silence, the celestial expanse above me… I don't have the words except to say it was a spiritual experience. And it made up for what was otherwise a less-than-productive week (photographically) at Death Valley. This is a "focus stack" of 5 exposures to try to bring out the interesting patterns in the playa. The terrain images were captured about 45 minutes after sunset, then I waited about 3 hours to capture the stars (less vibrant part of Milky Way), and blended them together. The glow on the horizon is light pollution from Las Vegas hitting the low clouds in the distance. Pre-dawn light on a windy morning in the Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley National Park. Recently I spent a week touring the California desert to take photos of unprotected lands that are under threat of energy development, but I couldn't resist stopping through Death Valley on my way back to Vegas where I would catch my flight home. The cloudy skies didn't show much promise for color that morning (although they did eventually part to create some nice golden light beams), so I decided to focus on the blowing sand with a telephoto lens.
