I find this to be quite a dramatic image with the effects of the small cloud, the light from the milky way is so strong it is far brighter than them. This is a 20 image stitch (4x5) so the quality is very high. I decided to do a 2:1 crop size to encompass more of the milky way. Amazing astrophotography night during my last trip to Reunion Island in the south of the island at Cap Mechant. I was lucky to get a thunderstorm on the horizon just below the Milky Way! NOTE: you will see that the exposure time is 30s. This is a SINGLE exposure, not multiple exposure blending! Then why the sea is like it was shot at a very high shutter speed? Because during the 30s it was pitch dark, and the whole scene was lit for a fraction of second by a huge strike of lightning (the white cloud). This image is one of those unexpected and unplanned shots which I happened to stumble across as I headed back to my car after a session of photographing the night sky. The Milky Way is soaring high above the landscape, but reflects beautifully into the river below, giving the image a very surreal feeling. For the tech heads - It's a vertical pano made up of 6 shots. Each shot is a single exposure and photographed with a Canon 6d, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 at 30 second shutter at f/2.8, ISO 6400, and stitched together in Autopano Giga. And for the record - that reflection in the river is real. This image is another one that looks great on the smart photo as a wallpaper, so I thought why not...I'll let you guys download it for free from here. [best viewed on black] Sitting alone under the stars on the "Racetrack" at Death Valley last week was one of the most surreal experiences I've had in years. The vast playa, the abject silence, the celestial expanse above me… I don't have the words except to say it was a spiritual experience. And it made up for what was otherwise a less-than-productive week (photographically) at Death Valley. This is a "focus stack" of 5 exposures to try to bring out the interesting patterns in the playa. The terrain images were captured about 45 minutes after sunset, then I waited about 3 hours to capture the stars (less vibrant part of Milky Way), and blended them together. The glow on the horizon is light pollution from Las Vegas hitting the low clouds in the distance.
