Pre-dawn light on a windy morning in the Mesquite Dunes of Death Valley National Park. Recently I spent a week touring the California desert to take photos of unprotected lands that are under threat of energy development, but I couldn't resist stopping through Death Valley on my way back to Vegas where I would catch my flight home. The cloudy skies didn't show much promise for color that morning (although they did eventually part to create some nice golden light beams), so I decided to focus on the blowing sand with a telephoto lens.
