I find this to be quite a dramatic image with the effects of the small cloud, the light from the milky way is so strong it is far brighter than them. This is a 20 image stitch (4x5) so the quality is very high. I decided to do a 2:1 crop size to encompass more of the milky way. Hope you enjoy.nice wallpaper picture free download via 500px http://ift.tt/1FP3jAX

Good Morning, Lofoten by yanl
Yes, this is my second trip to Lofoten islands of Norway, and I am missing Norway already. It was fun three weeks with Jeff Lewis, Tung and Maomao, we hiked a lot, explored some places with no trails and snow covered mountains. From this trip, I am very into mountaineering, especially towards snow mountains.nice wallpaper picture free download via 500px http://ift.tt/1HBJp9J

180°, 6000 Feet Above Walensee by pensrud
A pleasant snowshoe hike yielded a wonderful sunset. Sitting atop a mountain alongside a cliff, I peacefully enjoyed the gentle breeze and changing colors while drivers on the freeway down below sat in traffic following a weekend of skiing and winter activities. While I am sure many of them had a wonderful weekend, I wasn't envious to be sitting in traffic. I thought to myself, if only a couple of them could see the joy one could have sitting behind a camera screen on top of a mountain…but then I thought of patience and the love for the simple. I wondered to myself, of those cars and the people in them, what percentage could hike up a mountain? What percentage would enjoy that? What percentage would want to sit in the cold winter air with numb hands taking pictures? What percentage would see the beauty in that? And how many could sit still long enough without jumping on their cell phone to check Facebook, their emails, or to take a cell-fie… After these thoughts I turned the camera off and just sat for a few minutes watching birds coasting in the upward gusts of air, and a plane flying in the valley. Checked out the snow around me, and down the cliff. Took a deep breath and thanked myself for the effort to get there. After the colors faded I enjoyed a 2.5 hour hike back down to the car. The stars kept peeking out from behind a thin layer of clouds, and despite several opportunities for some nighttime winter astro images, I kept the camera in the pack, and just enjoyed a walk in the dark, with minimal flashlight…only using it once and a while if unsure of the terrain. Great evening.nice wallpaper picture free download via 500px http://ift.tt/1BtxUPX

River Crossing by markg
This image is one of those unexpected and unplanned shots which I happened to stumble across as I headed back to my car after a session of photographing the night sky. The Milky Way is soaring high above the landscape, but reflects beautifully into the river below, giving the image a very surreal feeling. For the tech heads - It's a vertical pano made up of 6 shots. Each shot is a single exposure and photographed with a Canon 6d, Canon EF 14mm f/2.8 at 30 second shutter at f/2.8, ISO 6400, and stitched together in Autopano Giga. And for the record - that reflection in the river is real. This image is another one that looks great on the smart photo as a wallpaper, so I thought why not...I'll let you guys download it for free from here. backyard ritual II by DeSelby
"Not many people seek out dark skies on winter nights. But those who do get a treat: a nice display of the Milky Way. It arches high overhead in early to mid evening right now. It's anchored in the southeast by Canis Major, which is home to Sirius, the night sky's brightest star. The Milky Way climbs from Sirius to the "horns" of Taurus high overhead, then drops toward M-shaped Cassiopeia in the north, and the tail of Cygnus, the swan, in the northwest. The winter Milky Way is thinner than that of summer because we're looking away from the crowded center of the galaxy and toward its sparsely populated outer precincts. In fact, the point that's directly opposite the galaxy's center is at the tip of one of the horns of Taurus, near a star called El Nath. The Milky Way's visible disk spans about a hundred thousand light-years. We're a bit more than half-way from the center to the edge, so it's about 25,000 light-years to the edge. Yet the galaxy doesn't end there. In fact, there's more stuff outside the disk than inside. Up to 90 percent of the Milky Way consists of dark matter -- material that produces no detectable energy, but that exerts a gravitational pull on the visible matter around it. Most of the dark matter forms a "halo" around the disk -- a dark zone that spans hundreds of thousands of light-years."* *from: http://ift.tt/19T7I8x wallpaper picture free download via 500px http://ift.tt/1FaeS1z
